Meet a Broker: Daniel Ufer | Director, Priority Insurance Brokers

Daniel Ufer is a Townsville-based insurance broker and Director of Priority Insurance Brokers. Advisr chatted with Daniel about his experience as a broker, his drive to help businesses succeed and his plans for the future.

Tell me a little about yourself
Dad of 3 to 2 girls and a boy which keeps me busy let alone the work involved in running a start up business. My particular interests are mainly around entrepreneurs, businesses, financial markets, growth strategies along with sports, family time and hiking in my down time.

What led you to becoming an insurance broker?
I actually fell into the insurance industry with my first job being in the Suncorp call centre assisting with their home, landlord and motor insurance enquiries. It wasn't until I progressed with Suncorp into a role that liaised with Brokers and I knew after multiple interactions that was the career path I was going to pursue.

What do you love about being an insurance broker?
Dealing with the many different businesses and business owners that we come across in the industry. I also love seeing businesses grow and evolve.

Tell us the story of a business you were able to help
Just recently I assisted a civil plumbing and drainage company that had grown substantially from just being a startup company in June this year to growing 4 times their estimated annual revenue in just a couple of months. With the business growing so quickly it was important that they didn't grow "too quickly" and leave their thriving business open to potentially large losses occurring. I take great pride and joy in watching companies get recognised for their hard work and being able to assist them along the way is an added bonus.

How can business owners benefit from working with an insurance broker?
There are so many ways that they can benefit. From handing over the admin tasks of a renewal, to the management of a claim, to getting some advice on things you should consider when looking to grow your business. An Insurance Broker should be considered as an addition to your business, our intentions are never just about selling policies but more so about giving you the information you need to make decisions about your business.

Who makes an ideal insurance client and why?
I think anyone is an ideal client as regardless of your industry, your size or what you're involved in there is always advice to be provided around your insurance products.

How do you go above and beyond as an insurance broker?

Management Liability insurance is designed to provide protection to both the business and its directors or officers for claims of wrongful acts in the management of the business.

A business insurance pack can provide cover for your business premises and contents, against loss, damage, theft or financial loss from an insured interruption to the business.

Purchase up to six products under one Business Insurance Package.

How do you go above and beyond as an insurance broker?
I really struggle to answer these types of questions because things that are considered "going above and beyond" just seems comes naturally to me because it's what I have grown to expect in return of other professional service providers that I engage with. It's the little 1% tasks that mean the most. Calling a client back even when you don't have an answer to just keep them updated without being followed up, meeting with business owners after work because they work on a construction site all day and are completely tied up in their business. Genuinely listening to their concerns and giving them solutions.

Do you have a particular area of expertise?
SME and Trade Contractors are starting to become a strong core of our business. This has mainly been based off the online engagement that we have been getting through our online channels. We are in a number of tradie forums and Facebook group where they really appreciate the easy method of contact for professional advice which then leads them to reaching out to us directly.

Which skills are most important for an insurance broker to succeed in today's market?
Being fluid and able to embrace change. I also think that if you let the stress of the industry overwhelm you then it will. Set yourself goals and watch yourself succeed.

What areas of insurance should people be aware of over the next 12 months?
I think that we are in a very interesting time at the moment and I am excited to see what comes of cyber insurance, crypto, NFT's and the digital evolution.

What's next for you and your business?
As a start-up business we will be heavily focused on growth for the next couple of years where we look to grow internally and externally. I'm excited to work with the businesses that we will meet along the way.
