Shane Brady is an award winning insurance broker who has extensive broking experience across a wide range of industries. Advisr chatted with Shane about his experience as a broker, and how he works to educate and engage with clients.

 

How can business owners benefit from working with an insurance broker?

Businesses benefit greatly from an experienced and professional Insurance Broker's experience and expertise. We help businesses identify, mitigate and transfer their risks using a range of different insurance policies and are meticulous by nature, always being on top of the finer details. We love sharing our expertise with clients, are always advocating for their best interests and provide guidance and protection especially when they need it most. 

 

Who makes an ideal insurance client and why?

The ideal client is a business who looks at their insurance broker as their partner who helps their business manage risk. Brokers love having clients who are engaged, interested and invested in getting their cover right to best protect them if they ever needed it to.

 

What do you love about being an insurance broker?

The opportunity it presents to provide protection to those in unfortunate positions. The most enjoyable aspect of broking often comes in the most trying of times, where we are able to really demonstrate our value and worth by helping the clients in times of desperation.

 

How do you go above and beyond as an insurance broker?

I am a big believer in taking every opportunity to go above and beyond for our clients. As small as the gratitude may seem at the time, the impact it has can often resonate far greater than the effort it took to do the act itself. With this in mind, wherever possible I take the chance to do things for clients I'm under no obligation to do, purely because I know it may help or have a positive effect. 

 

What has been your experience of marketing your services online?

Admittedly, there is room for improvement when it comes to marketing my services online. Although I feel confident in our LinkedIn and Website strategy, beyond that the experience in rather sporadic. 

 

Do you have a particular area of expertise?

As a general Insurance Broker, I have had experience across a very broad range of industries, but seemed to have gravitated towards both Manufacturing and Technology in particular. 

 

Why did you choose it?

My areas of expertise were the culmination of years of experience placing and protecting manufacturing and technology based risks. I'm not sure I actively chose this path, but have a wealth of knowledge in those two key areas which I'm able to share with clients everyday.

 

Which skills are most important for an insurance broker to succeed in today's market?

A keen eye for detail is obviously a must and likely the most important aspect to Insurance Broking, but being compassionate is probably the most underrated attribute you need as a broker, especially given you are often dealing with very distressed clients when needing to claim.

 

What areas of insurance should people be aware of over the next 12 months?

The typical answer here is Cyber Insurance which has become more prominent over the last few years, however, I would now consider Cyber Insurance to be mainstream and part of almost every comprehensive insurance program. I think in years to come parametric insurance will become more and more popular, especially for medium to large businesses and especially for risks that can be well measured and predicted as technology advances, like cyclones and earthquakes.
