How to Prepare for a Cyclone or Large Rainstorm in Australia

Australia’s tropical and coastal regions are no strangers to severe weather, with cyclones and large-scale rainstorms posing significant risks to homes, businesses, and communities. As an insurance broker, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of these extreme weather events and the importance of preparation in reducing damage and ensuring safety. Here’s what you need to know to protect your property, assets, and loved ones before, during, and after a major storm.

Before the Cyclone or Rainstorm: Preparation is Key

1. Review Your Insurance Coverage

•Ensure your insurance policy covers cyclone and flood damage. Some policies may exclude specific storm-related events, so check with your broker.

•Confirm your sum insured is enough to rebuild or replace valuable assets, factoring in rising construction costs.

•Store digital and hard copies of your insurance documents in a safe place.

2. Secure Your Home and Business

•Trim trees and remove loose branches that could become flying debris.

•Secure outdoor furniture, signage, and any loose items that may be picked up by strong winds.

•Clear gutters, downpipes, and stormwater drains to prevent water buildup.

•Reinforce doors, windows, and roofing where necessary.

3. Prepare an Emergency Kit

  • Your emergency kit should include:

  • Battery-powered radio and torch with spare batteries

  • First aid supplies and essential medications

  • Non-perishable food and bottled water (at least 3 days’ supply)

  • Important documents in a waterproof container (insurance policies, identification, emergency contacts)

  • Cash, in case ATMs and EFTPOS services are down

  • Blankets, clothing, and hygiene supplies

4. Develop an Emergency Plan

•Identify evacuation routes and safe locations in case you need to leave your home or business.

•Identify evacuation routes and safe locations in case you need to leave your home or business.

•Know where your local emergency shelters are located.

•Have a communication plan with family, employees, and neighbors.

During the Cyclone or Rainstorm: Staying Safe

1. Stay Informed

•Monitor weather warnings via the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and local authorities.

•Listen to emergency broadcasts on the radio or online.

2. Stay Indoors and Secure

•Keep away from windows, doors, and glass structures.

•Shelter in a small, enclosed room on the lowest floor, preferably one without windows.

•If flooding occurs, move to higher ground but avoid attics without exits.

•Avoid using electrical appliances and unplug sensitive electronics.

3. Follow Evacuation Orders

•If authorities recommend evacuation, do so early before conditions worsen.

•Turn off power, gas, and water before leaving if instructed.

•Take your emergency kit and lock your property before departing.

After the Storm: Recovery and Insurance Claims

1. Assess Damage Safely

•Wait for official clearance before leaving shelter or returning home.

•Be cautious of fallen power lines, unstable structures, and floodwaters.

2. Contact Your Insurance Broker

•Report damage to your insurer as soon as possible.

•Take photos and videos of damage for your claim.

•Keep receipts for emergency repairs and temporary accommodations.

3. Avoid Scams and Unlicensed Repairers

•Use trusted professionals for repairs and confirm their credentials.

•Beware of unsolicited offers for repairs, especially if they demand upfront payments.
